That was the machine I normally used for live sound but I'd have my Macbook Pro with me as a backup or the main machine for a smaller gig. I don't know about using them for live sound either. Windows vs Mac? I don't suppose they make running audio in Windows any more Mac like than any other plugin would. I always find ReaComp (and possibly a little distortion in some cases) well able to deliver the result I need when the stupid UA card is quickly maxed out. I want to say digital has evolved to the point where you can matter of fact do what you want without resorting to old school tricks. I think they kind of nailed the plugins better than anyone else. (Even if you get academic and start pointing out cases of two wrongs kinda making a right and all that.) And these were the guys that built some of those original devices that are held in high regard. Some of the old school hardware has a certain charm and appealing workflow. It looks like their hardware processing morphed into copyright protection for them though. Old stuff keeps working, so.īut I won't invest in them further until they catch up and go native. I still use the comps and the multiband comp often despite what I said above. That got me the Precision Multiband Comp, Precision Limiter, & Roland Space Echo.

When cross-grade to the pci card was required, they gave me a discount on the card and a coupon for free plugins. I still have the original 1176, LA-2A, & Fairchild comps & Pultec EQ bundle.

The PCIe acceleraters are the bomb though and work very well for Mac and PC and that is why I own a ton of their plug-ins.

They dropped Live Rack completely that people bought into not long ago and their new DAW LUNA was pimped to everybody for weeks to only find out it was for Macs only and their interface drivers for Windows hasn't been properly worked on for years, etc. The shenanigans they have pulled is really uncouth in many ways so I have a love/dislike for the company in general. With that said I have told them and on the forums that I will never buy another plug in from them again until they stop treating Windows users as second class citizens and this has to do only with their interfaces. You can find used cards with a beginner bundle of plugs on the cheap and I always only buy when the plugs are on sale.

They are very Mac biased and they continue to insult their Window's users with the interfaces they sell but I am using most of their plugs on a continual basis and my custom built eleven plus year old i7 computer never even gets to sweat because of all of my DSP acceleration.

I have an Octo and Quad PCIe cards and one of their interfaces just collecting dust. Some are show stoppers in very unique ways. Well, now that you have made up your mind, I will chime in to say IMHO the plugs they make are the best in the business and many many pros use them on a continual basis. Soundtoys Decapitator and a couple amp sims will get you every flavor of distortion you could want with a lot less screwing around.Įxcellent information! Thanks for taking the time! I really think the only reason they haven't kept up with the times is that needing their pci cards works like copy protection for them.Īll the tape simulator distortion boxes they've been getting into in recent times. But with modern computers and native processing and stock plugins like ReaComp available now I wouldn't even consider something as obsolete as their pci card needing plugins today. Hard to argue with something that works well. They had a decent enough cross-grade deal when they switched to their proprietary version of VST and stared making their own pci processing cards. You had Protools TDM on a Mac or you weren't running audio.

There was no native processing on computers yet.

When the original TDM compressor bundle for Protools came around, no one else had very good compressor plugins. (They have a couple audio interfaces with the pci card built in as well.) They're a proprietary version of VST but they will present as VST plugins when their pci card is installed. They still require one of their pci acceleration cards. Has that improved at all in recent years? Months? Weeks? Days? What I've found so far is that, like pretty much everything else, they work for some people and not for other people. I did a search and found some info but nothing really recent so I thought I'd ask.
